Family Affair
Family Affair
is a 1964 SS Chevelle that belongs to Doug. The last time the car was out
was in the early 80s. Recently, with the onset of drag racing
fever in the family, Doug has been spending more time on his car.
With the help of the Internet Doug is able to purchase the correct
combination of high performance parts.
Special thanks to all my brothers in helping me paint this
car back in the 70s. It has 41 total coats of paint, 13 coats of Large
Metal Flake Red (including base coats) and 28 coats of clear lacquer.
Without their help in would have been a lot tougher. Yes, the paint does
chip when the fan belt flies off at 11,000 rpms, but it still looks good after
26 years! The lettering was done by JIVE, a well-known artist that has
done some famous cars. (If your still out there it would be great to hear
from you!) We did pretty good back then in the 60s, 70s, and 80s with a
283/292 cid SBC; always looking over the shoulders of Mr. Bill Jenkins...what an
engineer! There were no parts like today's endless candy store. We
ran good low 11.00s with a 4 speed transmission. Bringing the car out this
year in 2002 we will be using BBC 460, open chamber with 990 heads and roller
cam and still a 4 speed. This time a Joe Liberty clutch less type and good
sinder iron clutch like I ran back then. (By the way...which is standard
equipment in Top Fuel and Funny Cars.) I love the water so you'll hear me
coming! Hope to see ya at the track with my family, because it's an
affair...a Family Affair.
